Laotie Mountain, Dalian, CN
Many raptors pass over Laotie Mountain on their migration, giving birders and photographers a chance to see hundreds of these magnificent birds at once. The best time to watch raptors is in the morning, when the sun warms the ground, and flocks of raptors rise with the updrafts.
One of the most memorable species I saw was the booted eagle, with two “headlights” on its shoulders. It made a low pass over my head, then flew below the cliff where I stood, giving me a clear view of its signature white shoulders.
Finless porpoises can also be spotted swimming below the mountain’s cliffs.
During my time at Laotie Mountain, I was able to observe researchers at a bird banding station conduct their bird-capturing and banding procedures. I was also given the opportunity to participate in the release of banded birds.
